MULTAN, Nov 16th:Pakistan Kisan Board has expressed disappointment over the performance of various ministries and said that indifferent attitude of public sector departments is badly hurting the interest of farmers.
In a press statement issued here on Monday, PKB Punjab chaopter chief Khurshid Khan Kanju said that the federal government failed to take up ‘water aggression’ issue with India. “We are being denied of our due share of water as India has built several dams for obstructing river flows into Pakistan,” he said, adding continuous low flows in River Chenab has ruin ed standing crops.He alleged that Ministry of Foreign Affairs had miserably failed to take up violation of Indus Waters Treaty with India. He added that Ministry of Water and Power on the other hand has not initiated construction work on several water reservoirs in the country. “We are facing acute shortage of water at a time when Indus water is being wasted into sea due to depleted storage capacity of existing dams,” he said. Khurshid Kanju said that high electricity tariff was also annoying farmers and management of Pepco did not succeed in taking steps for reduction in power rate. PKB chief also criticised rice procurement policy, saying that Passco was not aggressively buying paddy from farmers. “As Passco is not intervening in the market effectively, the price of paddy has continued to lower in the market,” he said.
